My kitten, Amor, fell asleep in my lap as I sat in my comfy chair in my home office this morning. I really hate disturbing a sleeping pet so I decided to take in my surroundings as she slept. The painting to my right caught my attention, a watercolor by Brother Mel titled “Out of Taos”.
I took a moment to identify what I could recognize. I spied a curved road, fence, houses, mountains, clouds, and sky. The sky is an orangish pink mixed with copper and rust. Not a typical palette for a sky; yet, I identified it as a sky. It may not look like a sky, but it is.

It’s an impression. All watercolor-y and runny. Color on top of color.
This school year may not look like a school year, but it is.
This year may be just like this sky: an impression of what we always knew to be true–all watercolor-y and runny. New and different on top of new and different.
Just as I know that Brother Mel painted a sky I know this school year will be just that–a school year. It just won’t look like a typical year.
May we take a moment to realize we have an opportunity to see something in a new and different way. At least an impression of it.
Amen.
